Description
The Courier recumbent cargo trike is designed for fast, secure transportation when carrying cargo and packages. It is very versatile and can be outfitted with a range of add-on or built-on cargo containers. It can be used as a faster road trike when outfitted with narrow high-pressure tires and the standard lightweight cargo hammock. Uniquely among our recumbent trike models, the Courier will accept a mid-drive electric motor and still have substantial cargo space left over, enough for the Action Packer box. The Courier comes standard with the mesh cargo hammock; any other type of cargo container is special-order. The Courier can be built with its frame sized to fit almost any size of vendor box. Because there is no axle between the wheels (power is transmitted through a "jack-shaft" in front of the cargo area), the cargo box can be deeper, lower, and much more capacious those that can be fit on conventional "adult" or "work" trikes with a solid axle. Because the seat rail is clear of the cargo area, the 8″ longer Courier can hold more cargo and larger boxes than the RoadRunner, which has a rail across the cargo area 8″ from the front.
Like all Lightfoot recumbent trikes, the Courier is much more stable than upright "adult trikes". Stability, when unloaded, is intermediate between the RoadRunner and the Greenway. For persons seeking more stability because of balance challenges, the Roadrunner will be a bit more stable than the Courier (especially for riders who are both short and very heavy), since the Courier rider's center of gravity is relatively closer to the narrow front of the triangle of support defined by the wheels. The greatest stability will be found in the ATC recumbent four-wheeler.
The Courier has very wide range gearing. Gears are shifted just like a 24-speed mountain bike. The compound-gearing transmission allows you also to choose 8 "ranges" from super-low range to high range; a preferred range can be chosen manually, or with an optional shifter you can select from all ranges when desired. The very powerful lowest gear is 9 or 12 (two options) "gear inches" (by contrast, mountain bikes usually have a low gear of approximately 22 to 24 gear-inches) for easy climbing of hills or pulling of heavy loads. The highest and fastest gear is 150 gear-inches (road racing bikes typically have a 120 gear-inch top).
